PRECISION
and ACCURACY
Dear Reader
During the year we are regularly asked to explain
the difference between precision and accuracy?
For those of you who are still not sure, accuracy
is a measure of how close a result is to the
true value and precision is a measure of how
repeatable the result is.
For example, at some time, most people will
have purchase or will have been given a set
of bathroom scales for their home.
If
you have, then I´m sure that every so often
you´ll step on them just to check your weight
- especially after the Christmas holiday festivities,
or in the weeks leading up to a beach holiday!

In
most cases, over a period of days, your weight
will not vary very much - a couple of pounds/or
a kilo at most - and in general terms the bathroom
scales can be considered as precise.
But sadly being precise does not necessarily mean
that they are accurate!
A few weeks ago a fellow office colleague went
to have her annual medical check at her local
doctor´s surgery and when asked to step onto the
professional - and very "accurate" -
weighing machine was distraught to find out she
was actually 6 kilos heavier than her scales were
registering at home.
Clearly her bathroom scales were precise but completely
inaccurate!
We hope that this light-hearted explanation highlights
the difference between these two important words
however, in the case of SMC, all of our products
