The importance of Zero
Dear Reader.
Zero (0) is the only number in numerical system that is neither negative nor positive and it represents the boundary between negative and the positive numbers. It was the last digit to be incorporated in many numeral systems and it’s the natural starting point, or origin, on many scales such as, coordinating axes and thermometers.Many experts believe the word zero originated from the Arabic Sanskrit translation of the word sunya, meaning void or empty, which, following various translations developed into the Latin word zephyrus - meaning a west wind. This transition later resulted in the creation of the word zephyr which has, and continues to be, commonly used to describe a very light breeze-"an almost nothing".
However, from a mathematical perspective, the number zero was not so easily accepted, with both Greek and Roman scholars finding the idea of having "nothing (zero) with a value of something" extremely difficult to understand.
As advanced mathematics and physics is reliant on having a clear understanding of zero, academic progress was sadly delayed for a couple of thousand years. However today, its importance as a number and also a word is now fully understood.
