Dear Reader.
Recently, when surfing on the internet, we stumbled
upon an interesting web site promoting a company
who specialise in "clearing all your online
and offline movements".
Bearing in mind that most Europeans use computers,
mobiles and credit cards on a daily basis, the
realisation that our on-line and off-line movements
can be traced, even when we think that they cannot,
started us thinking.
According to the Telegraph, a popular English
newspaper, "The average Briton is being recorded
3.000 times a week" (a statistic that could
probably be applied to other European countries).
It seems that every telephone call, swipe of a
credit or charge card or click of a mouse is being
recorded, compiled and stored and this information
can be disclosed to the approved legal authorities
if required.
Taking this a step further, in 2008 legislation
was passed in the USA, that allows their custom
officers to review any information contained in
the electric appliances (laptop, telephone, MP3,
etc) from anyone who trespasses their border.
Whilst many people recognise the need for heightened
global security in light of increasing terrorist
threats, there are those opposing these activities
who are suggesting that we are indeed becoming
an "Orwellian society"
Anyway, keeping with the tracing and tracking
theme, welcome to this month´s edition of e-Matters,
which includes details on our latest Vacuum Pad
which definitely won´t leave any contact marks
behind plus up-to-the-minute news other SMC topics.
Best wishes

Halogenated - Treatment given to the pad to improve the
rubber surface properties. It reduces the friction coefficient
of the rubber using the rubber’s reaction with double
bonds.
** None - No trace of visual marks nor marks either after
passing the "vapour test": Apply vapour to the
surface to thoroughly check for visual marks. |

| APRIL´S
IMPROVEMENTS |
|
 |
Our
focussed approach |
| |
| When
the Dutch based Foundation - Focus on Vision
- recently asked us to join an important project
to help less fortunate people in the Third World,
our experts just couldn’t resist the challenge.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO),
around one billion people in low-income countries
need glasses but lack either an ophthalmic infrastructure
or the money to pay for glasses.
Working alongside Focus on Vision´s other selected
project partners OTB, Mecon and ART, the challenge
was to help develop and manufacture optical
glasses, where the user can adjust the lenses
to meet their specific needs, for less than
1 Euro each.
Although this project has provided the working
group with lots of technical and technological
obstacles to overcome, we are extremely pleased
to confirm that the first shipment of low cost,
but fully adjustable, glasses has already been
distributed in Ghana and Tanzania.

S0700
- 5 Port Solenoid Valve |
 |
|
Our S0700 is the most compact 5 port solenoid valve
on the market. In its smallest form it’s only 7mm wide!
Therefore it offers a very effective space saving solution
when used with manifolds. But this reduced size does
not mean a reduction in performance as this miniature
valve offers: high flow capacity (for actuators up to
Ø25 mm bore), low power consumption (0.35W) and
long life (a minimum of 50 million cycles).
Available in a wide range of electrical connections
including: Serial transmission system (SMC Series EX600,
EX500, and EX250), D-sub connector, Flat ribbon cable,
PC wiring system, Terminal block box, Lead wire or Circular
connector
Our SMC specialist especially recommends
it for: any application
that would benefit from downsizing or weight reduction
plus a cost effective option as a part of your Energy
Saving activities

| EU
Machinery Directive Leaflet |
| |
 |
|
Research has shown that in Europe, a work related accident
occurs every five seconds!
This exceptionally high figure results in hundreds of
millions of lost working days, with the longer term
impact of several million people who are no longer able
to work again due to chronic disability!
Therefore, the European Commission takes a keen interest
in all issues related to occupational health and safety
including the introduction of various EU legislation
including comprehensive Health and Safety Directives.
The aims of these directives are twofold: to ensure
workers’ health, safety and well-being, and to maintain
the well-being and productivity of businesses. The basis
of the directives is from scientific and technical advice
from across the EU.
With this in mind, some of you may be aware of the European
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC which came into force
at the end of December 2009
To help our customers we have recently completed an
easy to read overview leaflet which highlights the main
safety standards which need to be met in relation to
machine safety.
Whilst this leaflet is not intended to replace the European
Commissions official documentation on this important
Directive, we hope that it will act as a general guide
for those of you who are not familiar with this new
legislation.
