Electricity
- some interesting facts
Dear Reader.
Many people believe that Benjamin Franklin was
the first person to discover electricity whilst
flying a kite during a thunderstorm. However,
some of you may be surprised to hear that as
far back as 600AD the Greek writer, Thales of
Miletus, wrote of static electricity that attracted
pieces of straw and hair to amber which had
been rubbed.
Today, with many scientists questioning the
validity of the Franklin story, as a direct
lighting strike would have probably been fatal,
the Italian born physicist Alessandro Volta
is now credited with creating the first voltaic
pile in 1800 (or battery as we call it today)
following his discovery that certain chemical
reactions could produce electricity. And it
was also Alessandro who supposedly created the
first transmission of electricity by linking
positive and negative charged connectors and
by driving an electrical charge through them.
However it was another 31 years before Michael
Faraday created the first electric dynamo and
several decades later before Thomas Edison invented
the first light bulb.
I wonder what Messrs Thales of Miletus, Franklin,
Volta, Faraday and Edison would say if they
could return again and see for example Peugeot´s
EX1 Concept Car, launched just two months ago
in Paris, and how we have progressed in harnessing
the power of electricity today!
Powered by two electric motors which produce
a peak power output of 340bhp and a constant
maximum torque of 480Nm, the vehicle is currently
setting international speed records for an electric
terrestrial car.
With the race now on, many of the major car
manufacturers are now working flat out to develop
environmentally friendly, economically viable,
electric road cars which some experts are already
predicting will play a huge part in the future
of motoring.
Welcome to this new edition of e-Matters which,
by co-incidence, highlights our recently launched
additions to our "easy to programme" LE electric
actuator range which are available in Europe
today.

Series
LEYG, LEHZJ and LESH#L - more options from our "easy to
programme" electric actuator range
Joining
our rapidly expanding LE electric actuator range we are please
to unveil three new options:
Series
LEYG – a guide rod type electric actuator with excellent rigidity
 |
|
Available with slide or ball bushing bearing options
with a choice of step or servo motors, these actuators
can be programmed up to 64 points. Compatible with moment
load and suitable for use as a stopper, these actuators
can operate at speeds up to 500mm/s with position repeatability
of ±0.2mm and with maximum thrust of 141N to 707N depending
on the selected model.
Our expert recommends this electric actuator
for:
Transfer and Assembly applications where accurate positioning
and thrust control are required
|
Series
LEHZJ - an improved two finger electric gripper with protective
dust cover
 |
|
This accurate dual fingered electric gripper has been
specifically designed for use in applications where
dust contamination can be a problem. With its sealed
construction (IP 50 enclosure compatible) dust or cutting
particles cannot enter inside the actuators body and
with a choice of chloroprene, fluororubber or silicon
rubber finger material, these grippers can be used in
numerous environments.
Our expert recommends this electric actuator
for:
Transfer and Assembly applications which require accurate
alignment, selection or soft handling plus applications
where gripping/gripper space is restricted.
|
Series
LESH#L - a symmetrical type electric slide table extending our
existing LESH range
 |
|
With the same performance features as our popular Series
LESH electric slide table, this new addition offers
the space saving possibility of mounting two slide tables
side-by-side (symmetrically) without any interference
of the cabling.
Our expert recommends this electric actuator
for:
General industrial transportation applications including
the positioning of pallets on a conveyor or for Z motion
pick and place
