Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité ... and the metre.

Dear Reader.

During the French Revolution. as the mob rose up against absolutism, feudalism and class privileges, the French Academy of Science took up an old dream: to define a standard unit of length. They defined a metre as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a meridian through Paris.

For us to get an idea of how necessary this was, before the Revolution, France used 250,000 units of measurement: for example, land could be measured by the time spent by a man in harvesting it. So, there can be no discussion about its necessity, maybe only about the timing.

However, while the French gallows was packed with visitors, some of them notorious, such as Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette or Robespierre himself, 2 astronomers, Méchain and Delambre were sent off on a 6-year journey. Their objective was to measure the meridian from Dunkirk to Barcelona.

On April 1795, after an arduous job and a little data manipulation credited to Méchain, the metric system was adopted, and its agreed length literally carved in an iron bar. But this definition was inaccurate and very impractical. In 1983 it was definitively guillotined by the Geneva Conference on Weights and Measures which finally defined the metre as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458th of a second.

So thanks to the French revolution and despite Napoleon (who banned it for a while), we can present you this month with our latest chiller, complying with standard mounting dimensions. Welcome to the May edition of e-Matters.
