Cobbler, stay by your last - what to outsource

In this exclusive article, the Head of NBC (Nordic Baltics Countries) Torbjörn Lundberg from SMC shares insights on the ever-evolving world of automation and its profound impact on various industries.

In an increasingly complex industrial environment and increasingly tough competition, every manufacturing step must be optimized and current methods questioned. That you should do what you are good at is pretty obvious, but who is going to do everything else that is needed for a modern production?

For many years, labour-intensive manufacturing has been relocated to low-cost countries. As wages and other costs rise in these countries, a lot of production has been moved back home. The Nordics has a tradition of a high degree of automation and the number of companies that build special machines for automated manufacturing of products is disproportionately high in this part of the world, compared to most other countries. However, not everything can be assembled or assembled completely automatically, but still must be done by human hands.

For many machine manufacturers, production could be optimized by outsourcing the assembly of standard products to a subcontractor who is an expert in doing that type of work. Examples of assembly are control cabinets, panels, etc.

One area that may be worth looking at is applications where the assembly of pneumatic components, among other things, is included.

It could lead to:

  • Simplified purchasing procedure; just one part-number

  • Time saving; possibility of just-in-time solutions and delivery to the place where the machine is built

  • Space saving; no stock needed

  • Cost effectiveness; thanks to fast and experienced assembly staff at the contract manufacturer, usually many times faster than own staff and thus at a lower cost

  • Flexibility, in case of varying occupancy; you only pay for the assembly that are made and have no fixed costs

  • Correct dimensioning, stylish solutions, tested and ready
