SMC earns energy conservation award, leading by example in energy efficiency and CO₂ reduction

SMC’s energy-saving initiatives at our factories, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; “Challenging the Limits of Air Reduction: Decarbonization through Air-Saving Equipment × Lowering Facility Air Pressure,” won “The Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ) Chairman’s Award” in the Best Practice Category of the FY2025 Energy Conservation Grand Prize.

Many organisations talk about energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. At SMC, we believe credibility comes not from claims, but from action.

For many years, SMC has supported customers with products and guidance focused on improving compressed air efficiency and reducing energy consumption. We also recognise that suppliers can sometimes be perceived as offering advice without fully demonstrating its real-world impact.

That’s why SMC applies the same principles in its own manufacturing operations.

As a manufacturer, SMC understands first-hand the challenges of rising energy costs and the importance of effective environmental policies. Recognising that compressed air can account for 20–30% of a factory’s total electricity consumption, SMC launched a company-wide air-saving initiative across all factories beginning in 2024.

Operating under the concept of “low pressurisation,” SMC re-examined air supply settings across all equipment and machinery. By visualising air consumption, unnecessarily high pressures were eliminated, and a combination of air-saving technologies was introduced to optimise overall performance.

The results were clear and measurable. These initiatives delivered an energy-saving effect equivalent to 302 kilolitres of crude oil per year, while achieving an excellent economic return with an investment payback period of just two years.

In recognition of these achievements, SMC was awarded the ECCJ Chairman’s Award (Best Practice category) at the FY2025 Energy Conservation Grand Prize. This marks the second consecutive year SMC has received a prestigious award from the ECCJ. Last year SMC’s Air Management System (AMS) was recognised as an energy-efficient product in the Products and Business Models Category.

The award is presented by ECCJ (Energy Conservation Center, Japan), the country’s leading organisation dedicated to promoting energy efficiency and conservation across industry.
For SMC, energy efficiency isn’t just a recommendation — it’s a proven practice.
