Future proof cooling with SMC’s new CO2 chiller

Future proof cooling with SMC’s new CO2 chiller

SMC launches the HR□C series – a compact and energy-efficient chiller range using CO₂ (R744) as a natural refrigerant. Fully compliant with the latest EU F-Gas Regulation (EU 2024/573), this solution is ideal for manufacturers seeking sustainable thermal control without compromising performance or safety. The HR□C series is designed for easy integration into industrial systems and supports a wide range of applications where precise temperature control is critical.

The HR□C Series uses CO₂ to deliver cooling capacities from 1.3 to 11,5 kW, with temperature stability of ±0.1 °C. Unlike traditional refrigerants, CO₂ is non-toxic, non-flammable, making it safe to handle and suitable for air transport. This eliminates logistical challenges and ensures long-term compliance with environmental regulations beyond 2032.

Thanks to inverter technology, the HR□C Series adjusts compressor, pump, and fan speed to match thermal load, resulting in significant energy savings, up to 50% compared to non-inverter types. It is ideal for applications such as:

  • Laser welding and oscillator cooling

  • Semiconductor and electronics cleaning

  • UV lamp cooling in printing machines

  • Resin moulding machine temperature control

  • High-frequency heating systems

  • Tap water cooling tower replacement

With a wide set temperature range, 5 to ~40 °C for HRSC and -20 to 90°C for HRZC, the HR□C series adapts to diverse environments. It can handle several different fluids including deionised water and is suitable for sensitive applications in electronics, semiconductors, and medical equipment. A modern touch panel interface with advanced diagnostics and front-side access simplifies operation and maintenance.

With the HRC Series, we offer a future-proof cooling solution that meets the latest environmental standards while delivering high precision and energy efficiency. It’s a smart choice for manufacturers who want to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid the complications of flammable refrigerants,” says Mattias Sundberg, Product Manager at SMC.
