Compact SMC ionizer offers integrated valve

Compact SMC ionizer offers integrated valve

With the new IZS51 series bar-type ionizer from global automation specialist SMC, machine builders and end users can enjoy rapid static charge neutralisation using a compact device with the option of a fully integrated valve unit. The combined ionizer/valve means even more savings in space and wiring, alongside zero flow consumption in standby mode.

Although ionizers are mature technology, there is still room for innovation. The new SMC IZS51 series bar-type ionizer leads the way by offering the option for an integrated valve unit. Conventional ionizers require a separate valve for stopping ion generation and air supply, taking up extra space and necessitating additional wiring. SMC has solved this issue for machine builders and plant engineers by making the IZS51 available with an integrated two-port valve.

Another advance for users of the IZS51 ionizer is IO-Link compatibility. It is now possible to monitor ion balance and detect device faults using IO-Link cyclic data, aiding the transition towards preventive maintenance strategies. IO-Link communication also allows users to adjust parameters remotely and quickly.

Continuing the ease-of-use theme, SMC’s integrated bar-type ionizer offers an LCD display for at-a-glance status monitoring, while simultaneously helping to reduce errors and time during set-up routines. The improved user interface makes it easier to check for key functions, such as maintenance requirements or the verification of output signals, for example.

The upside of downsizing

The flat profile of the SMC IZS51 ionizer offers a reduction in both height and width dimensions compared with the existing model. At just 70 x 28 mm, easier installation in confined spaces is a major benefit. Moreover, the possibility of configuring the electrical wiring (M12 connector) and air tubing on the same side helps to avoid obstructions during installation.

A new cartridge design provides a further notable advantage. By concentrating air around the emitter (to reduce emitter contamination) - and using assist air for ion transmission - factories can reduce maintenance hours. In short, this innovative concept helps to maintain fast discharge times by keeping the emitter clean. A maintenance detection function constantly monitors for emitter contamination, with a choice of three detection levels.

Up to speed

The SMC IZS51 also delivers on performance. Optimised air flow around the emitter tip improves ion transfer efficiency against the previous-generation model. Depending on conditions, the target object and installation distance, the IZS51 can achieve static neutralisation in just 0.1 seconds, some 14% faster than SMC’s existing solution.

Industries such as plastics and semiconductor suffer enormously from static load, impacting processes such as parts conveying/feeding, assembly, moulding, forming and converting. For those looking to ensure their ionizer delivers in metrics such as size, ease-of-installation, communication capabilities, ease-of-maintenance and speed, the new SMC IZS51 integrated bar-type ionizer stands up to scrutiny.
