Valves

Throughout our entire valve portfolio, you will find some that are able to control the flow direction with the addition of a feature that makes the machine more reliable and, therefore, safer. Here are some of them.

Airline equipment

SMC puts a wide range of pressure regulators at your disposal to control the line pressure of your pneumatic facility. With a modular design to be placed together with other air treatment components or clustered in a manifold to manage different pressure levels at the same time. Choose the one that bests fits you.

Flow control equipment

SMC provides a wide range of flow control valves for direct mounting into the cylinder port. As such, this eliminates the problem of a tube bursting and makes the machine safer. This section also includes residual pressure release valves to release trapped air in the case of a jam. Therefore making maintenance procedures safer.

Check valves

Check valves are usually placed in safety circuits. They are key elements in reliability, making the flow unidirectional when required.

FAQ about machine safety solutions and components in automation

What does machine safety mean in automation?

Machine safety in industrial contexts is about managing and reducing the risks associated with operating automated equipment through a structured, end-to-end approach. In automation systems, this means assessing hazards throughout the entire machine lifecycle and putting in place both technical safeguards and organisational practices to avoid incidents.

Robust safety concepts depend on dependable safety components and dedicated automation safety solutions. These are designed to keep machine behaviour controlled and predictable during regular production, servicing activities, and when faults occur, while also helping organisations comply with European safety requirements.

How does machine safety automation improve operational reliability?

Machine safety automation improves operational reliability by embedding safety principles directly into equipment design. When this approach is applied, manufacturers can significantly limit unplanned stoppages and disruptions caused by safety incidents. Automated safety functions continuously monitor operating conditions and take action as soon as irregular situations are detected.

Using certified safety automation products alongside proven machine safety components supports stable and consistent production. At the same time, it ensures a high level of protection for both operators and maintenance teams.

Which machine safety components does SMC provide?

SMC offers a broad portfolio of machinery safety components for industrial automation, such as safety-rated pneumatic valves, air preparation units, flow control devices, and check valves.

These automation safety products are intended to help reduce risk within machine safety automation, enabling machine builders to develop compliant systems that align with international safety standards.

Why is EN ISO 13849-1 essential for machine safety design?

EN ISO 13849-1 is a core reference in machine safety because it defines how safety-related control systems must be designed and assessed. It uses Performance Levels (PL) to indicate how dependably safety functions perform under specified conditions.

Applied in machine safety automation, this framework helps confirm that the chosen safety components deliver risk reduction that is both consistent and demonstrable. In doing so, it supports CE compliance and strengthens long-term operational safety as well as overall system reliability.

What safety functions can be implemented with automation safety products?

Today’s automation safety products support multiple safety functions, including Safe Venting, Prevention of Unexpected Start-up, Safe Brake Control, and Safe Torque Off.

When implemented with certified machine safety components, these functions underpin effective machine safety automation concepts by keeping machine behaviour controlled and predictable during emergency events and maintenance activities.

How does PneuSAFE support machine safety automation projects?

PneuSAFE is an online engineering tool designed to make it easier to implement machine safety automation solutions for pneumatic applications. It helps engineers choose validated safety architectures and automatically generates technical documentation, including pneumatic schematics, bills of materials, and SISTEMA-compatible data.

This way, engineering work becomes more efficient and consistent, while ensuring machine safety requirements are properly applied using approved automation safety products.

What regulations set the machine safety requirements in Denmark?

Denmark’s machine safety requirements follow the European regulatory framework applied via the EEA Agreement. This includes the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which has been transposed into Danish legislation and, at EU level, is being succeeded by the EU Machinery Regulation.

Compliance is typically supported by harmonised standards. EN ISO 12100 provides a practical basis for risk assessment and risk reduction, while EN ISO 13849 gives guidance on the design and validation of safety-related control systems.

Taken together, these rules and standards create a consistent foundation for machine safety automation in Denmark, ensuring machinery and safety components align with common European safety requirements.

Is expert support available for implementing machine safety solutions?

Yes, specialist technical support is available for machine safety projects, including on-site consulting, training, and system validation. These services often include risk assessments, the development of safety concepts, and the preparation of documentation required for CE marking.

Professional guidance also helps ensure automation safety products are chosen correctly and integrated effectively into dependable machine safety automation systems.

How can I get application-specific advice for a machine safety project?

To receive advice aligned with your particular project, you can reach out to a local machine safety specialist and review your application in detail. This tailored support helps pinpoint the most appropriate safety components and automation safety products, while ensuring compliance, efficient implementation, and long-term operational safety.
