Valves

Throughout our entire valve portfolio, you will find some that are able to control the flow direction with the addition of a feature that makes the machine more reliable and, therefore, safer. Here are some of them.

Airline equipment

SMC puts a wide range of pressure regulators at your disposal to control the line pressure of your pneumatic facility. With a modular design to be placed together with other air treatment components or clustered in a manifold to manage different pressure levels at the same time. Choose the one that bests fits you.

Flow control equipment

SMC provides a wide range of flow control valves for direct mounting into the cylinder port. As such, this eliminates the problem of a tube bursting and makes the machine safer. This section also includes residual pressure release valves to release trapped air in the case of a jam. Therefore making maintenance procedures safer.

Check valves

Check valves are usually placed in safety circuits. They are key elements in reliability, making the flow unidirectional when required.

FAQ about machine safety solutions and components in automation

What is machine safety in automation?

In an industrial context, machine safety refers to the systematic approach used to minimize risks arising from the operation of automated machinery. Within machine safety automation, this involves identifying hazards at every stage of the machine lifecycle and implementing technical and organizational measures that prevent accidents.
Effective safety concepts rely on reliable machinery safety components and automation safety products that ensure predictable machine behavior during normal operation, maintenance, and fault conditions, while supporting regulatory compliance across Europe.

How does machine safety automation improve operational reliability?

By integrating machine safety automation principles into machine design, manufacturers can significantly reduce unplanned downtime and safety-related incidents. Automation-based safety functions continuously monitor operating conditions and intervene when abnormal situations occur.
Using certified automation safety products and robust machinery safety components helps ensure stable production processes while maintaining a high level of machine safety for operators and maintenance personnel.

What types of machinery safety components are available from SMC?

SMC offers a broad range of machinery safety components designed for industrial automation, including safety-rated pneumatic valves, air preparation units, flow control devices, and check valves.
These automation safety products are engineered to support risk reduction strategies within machine safety automation, helping machine builders design compliant systems that meet international safety requirements.

Why is EN ISO 13849-1 essential for machine safety design?

EN ISO 13849-1 plays a central role in machine safety by defining how safety-related control systems must be designed and evaluated. The standard introduces Performance Levels (PL) to assess how reliably safety functions perform under defined conditions.
Applying this methodology within machine safety automation ensures that selected machinery safety components achieve consistent and verifiable risk reduction, supporting CE conformity and long-term operational safety.

Which safety functions can be implemented using automation safety products?

Modern automation safety products enable a wide range of safety functions, such as Safe Venting, Prevention of Unexpected Start-up, Safe Brake Control, and Safe Torque Off.
When combined with certified machinery safety components, these functions form the foundation of effective machine safety automation concepts, ensuring controlled machine behavior during emergency situations or maintenance activities.

How does PneuSAFE assist with machine safety automation projects?

PneuSAFE is a web-based engineering tool developed to simplify the implementation of machine safety automation solutions in pneumatic systems. It supports the selection of validated safety architectures and generates technical documentation such as pneumatic diagrams, bills of materials, and SISTEMA-compatible data.
This approach accelerates engineering workflows and ensures that machine safety requirements are consistently applied using approved automation safety products.

Which regulations define machine safety requirements in Estonia?

Machine safety in Estonia follows the European legal framework, including the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and its transition to the EU Machinery Regulation. Harmonized standards such as EN ISO 12100 and EN ISO 13849 govern risk assessment and control system design.
These regulations provide a uniform basis for machine safety automation across the EU, ensuring that machinery safety components are designed and validated according to shared safety principles.

Is professional support available for machine safety implementation?

Yes, local technical support is available to assist with machine safety projects, including on-site consulting, training, and system validation. Services typically cover risk assessment, safety concept development, and documentation for CE marking.
Expert guidance ensures that automation safety products are correctly selected and integrated into reliable machine safety automation solutions.

How can I receive customized advice for my machine safety project?

For project-specific guidance, you can contact a local machine safety specialist to discuss your application in detail. Personalized support helps identify the most suitable machinery safety components and automation safety products, ensuring compliance, efficiency, and long-term operational safety.
